A Super Bowl Preview: Budweiser Canada

Today is Thursday, which means one of the biggest nights in the world of advertising and football is just three sleeps away. To get you excited about Sunday night’s game between the Giants and Patriots, Budweiser has leaked its 2012 Super Bowl commercial early on Youtube.

There are so many good things to be said about this commercial, all of them genuinely rooted in how happy people feel after watching it. I also love that Budweiser Canada decided to stay true to the Canadian national sport of hockey (and not football) for this Super Bowl commercial.

After this video, I can’t think of a better way to kick off the countdown to the Super Bowl.

Timeless Ad: Cadbury’s Gorilla

I think this ad was ultimately what turned me onto the Marketing/Advertising path in my first year of university. To this day, I still think it’s great – it’s classic, it’s effective, it’s something else.

Gorillas and chocolates cannot be further apart from each other, but advertising doesn’t have to portray the product so much as portray its benefits. Cadbury gives people enjoyment and pleasure. That’s why the gorilla is rocking out on the drums. And that’s why this ad works.

Facebook Timeline: A Year With & Without Drugs

For over 4 months, there have been talks of the new Facebook timeline. Finally, the new timeline is finally coming to all public profiles. The fresh layout no doubt opened up a world of opportunities and challenges for ad agencies. Some agencies are already exploring ways to use the new timeline design, take McCann Digital Israel as an example:

The agency has used the new Facebook design to advertise for the Israel Anti-Drug Authority. Utilizing the split-screen layout to compare life in a year with and without drugs, they created a profile for a fictional man called Adam Barak.

This campaign demonstrates the need for flexibility in the world of advertising. Top ad agencies must respond to changes in the market space quickly, including changes to media channels, and integrate them into their strategies. Hopefully we’ll be seeing more creative uses of the new Facebook profile layout in the future!
